The main tutelary shrine of Hakata, Kushida Shrine is said to have been built in the eighth century. The shrine is the starting point of the Oiyama race held on the last day of the Hakata Gion Yamagasa Festival, one of the summer's main events in the city of Fukuoka. The Hakata Historical Museum within the shrine displays materials on the history and culture of Hakata as well as the shrine's treasures and the local Kazariyama (decorated floats).

Literally meaning "sandbank," Nakasu is Kyushu's largest entertainment district. In the evening, neon signs reflect romantically on the waters of the Nakagawa River which runs adjacent to the area. The historic Kawabata district and the newly opened "Canal City Hakata" and "Hakata Riverain" create an interesting contrast of the old living beside the new.

Yatai(s) are open-air food stalls. At dusk, the streets gradually become festive as the stalls' lamps are lit one by one. Yatai mainly operate along the Nakagawa River along Nakasu, Showa and Watanabe Avenues in Tenjin. They serve a variety of unique meals, so venturing out to sample a few might be an interesting experience.

The seaside area facing Hakata Bay has recently been seeing rapid development recently. Modern skyscrapers dot the artificial beach, with landmark buildings such as Fukuoka Tower; Marizon, a resort compound pushing out onto the bay; and Hawks Town with Fukuoka Dome (home of the 'Hawks' local baseball team) as its main structure. There are also offices and residential buildings, making for an image of ultra-modern urbanity.
One of the nation's largest multi-function complexes, Hawks Town is located in the Momochi District and is the home of Fukuoka's franchise pro baseball team, the Fukuoka Soft Bank Hawks. The dome is famous for its retractable roof which was the first such roof built in Japan. The Hawks Town Mall consists of a cinema, live music house, game center, shops and restaurants. The JAL Resort Sea Hawk Hotel Fukuoka adjacent to Fukuoka Yahoo! Japan Dome offers all the possible enjoyment of being in an urban resort.

Featuring shops selling men's and women's fashions, children's clothing, furniture, interior goods and outdoor goods there should be something here for the whole family.
